Metal weight calculator

Choose your metal grade and shape. Calculate the weight of one piece or a batch.

1. Country & material

Country sets a suggested display and units, not a mandatory specification. Only sourced references are included. Unmapped grades retain their original name. Match the grade and specification on your supplier’s certificate; related designations do not certify interchangeability.

2. Shape & dimensions

Fractions welcome: 1/8, 1/4, or 1 1/2. Select inches for inch measurements. Enter mixed numbers with a space.

Dimensions accept decimals (0.125), fractions (1/8), and mixed numbers (1 1/2). Use the selected unit.

How the estimate works

Weight = cross-sectional area × length × density × piece count. Dimensions are converted to meters before calculating. Results show kilograms and pounds.

Plate: width × thickness. Round bar: πD²/4. Square bar: side². Hexagonal bar: √3 × across-flats²/2. Round tube: πt(D − t). Square tube: 4t(S − t), where S is the outside side. Rectangular hollow: 2t(W + H − 2t). All these areas are multiplied by length.

Reference densities are estimates, not measurements of your specific batch. Composition, temperature and material condition can affect density. Use a supplier value when available. HR and CR describe processing and do not identify a grade.

Hollow sections use uniform walls and sharp corners. Corner radii, coatings, welds, holes and manufacturing tolerances are excluded; actual weight may differ. This calculator estimates metal mass only.

Start with your supplier’s specification

  1. Choose the material family and actual grade. Use supplier density if available.
  2. Choose the shape, then the dimension unit. For tubes, enter outside dimensions and wall thickness.
  3. Enter every required dimension and the number of pieces. Examples in empty fields are hints, not values.
  4. Calculate and check the density, units and dimensions in the result before using the estimate.

Worked examples

Steel plate: 7.85 kg

For one 1,000 × 100 × 10 mm plate at a supplier density of 7,850 kg/m³: 1 × 0.1 × 0.01 = 0.001 m³. Mass = 0.001 × 7,850 = 7.85 kg. Two identical pieces weigh 15.7 kg. Choose custom density to reproduce this example exactly.

Aluminum 6061 plate: 2.7 kg

For the same 1,000 × 100 × 10 mm dimensions, choose Aluminum 6061 and its reference density of 2,700 kg/m³. Mass = 0.001 × 2,700 = 2.7 kg per piece. Changing the grade can change the reference density and result.

Before you order

Which dimensions do I use for a tube?

Use the outside diameter for a round tube or outside width and height for a rectangular tube, plus wall thickness. Do not substitute the inside dimensions. The calculator subtracts the hollow section.

Why does the supplier’s weight differ?

Corner radii, wall and dimension tolerances, welds, coatings and actual alloy density can change the delivered weight. This is a geometric estimate, not a certified batch measurement.

Does HR or CR change the metal grade?

HR means hot rolled and CR means cold rolled. They describe processing, not a grade or a guarantee of equivalent properties. Check the supplier’s grade and specification.

Can I enter fractional inches?

Yes. Select inches, then enter 1/8 or a mixed number such as 1 1/2. Changing the unit clears dimensions so old numbers are not interpreted in a new unit.
